Athlete Ambassadors
|
|
Right To Play partners with and is supported by hundreds of Olympic and professional athletes who believe in the power of sport to change lives. These athletes from around the world bring sport and play to the lives of children affected by war, poverty and disease.
Right To Play values these athletes because they recognize the value of sport and play and the benefits it can bring to children. Athletes are unique because they act as role models and are an inspiration to many people. They are also in the public eye a lot, which helps Right To Play spread the word and gain support.
Right To Play has been garnering the support of athletes since the 2000 Olympic Summer Games in Sydney, where thousands of athletes signed Right To Play's banner supporting every child's right to play.
Right To Play Athlete Ambassadors join us on trips to our projects, they are the face of Right To Play in our ad campaigns and they represent Right To Play at public events and meetings.
Right To Play Athlete Supporters are athletes who help spread the word of Right To Play and generate interest among the sporting community and fellow athletes. These athletes promote Right To Play by taking part in awareness efforts and fundraising campaigns.

Our Athlete Ambassadors and Supporters support us in a variety of ways, some of which are:
- Participating in program launches and events and speaking out on the importance of physical activity for the healthy development of children. In the past, Olympians Silken Laumann, Stian Grimseth, Wayne Gretzky, Nikki Stone, Bart Veldkamp, and Dan Jansen have spoken eloquently about the importance for sport and play for all.
- Taking part in special overseas missions to Africa, the Middle East or Asia to raise awareness for Right To Play's projects. Athlete Ambassadors Silken Laumann, Trent Dimas, and Mike Powell travelled to Eritrea and the Sudan to bring sport and play to these desperate communities, and Summer Sanders travelled to Sierra Leone to witness the impact Right To Play programs have had on former child combatents. Steve Podborski, Charmaine Crooks and Angela Ruggiero travelled to Uganda to witness our projects working with refugees in Oruchinga and Nakivale camps.
- Fundraising for Right To Play by donating authentic sports memoribilia for auctions. At every Olympic Games, Right To Play holds an online athlete memorobilia auction. Athletes donate their equipment, uniforms and collectibles to the auction and all proceeds go directly to Right To Play programming.
- Promoting Right To Play by encouraging fellow athletes to come on board as Athlete Ambassadors, or by wearing our logo on their competition jerseys.
